La Jolla ~ The “Jewel” of the Pacific
La Jolla is an affluent neighborhood in San Diego, California. It is a hilly seaside community, occupying 7 miles of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean within the northern city limits. La Jolla had the highest home prices in the nation in 2008 and 2009, as the average 4 bedroom home in La Jolla was valued at $2.1 million in 2009. La Jolla is surrounded on three sides by magnificent ocean bluffs and beaches and located only 12 miles north of Downtown San Diego.
The climate is mild, with an average daily temperature of 70 degrees. La Jolla is home to a variety of businesses in the areas of lodging, dining, shopping, software, finance, luxury real estate (Willis Allen Real Estate Corporate Headquarters), bio-engineering, medical practice and scientific research. The University of California San Diego (UCSD) is located in La Jolla, as are The Bishop’s School, La Jolla Country Day School, Salk Institute, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Scripps Reasearch Institute, Scripps Hospitals, Birch Aquarium, Mount Soledad Cross and “The Pink Lady” or better known as La Valencia Hotel, which has been an intimate and charming destination to remember since its opening in 1926.
“La Jolla” is derived from the Spanish word for jewel and the golf course bearing its name, La Jolla Country Club, is truly a gem. The Club’s Monterey Colonial-style clubhouse has spectacular views of the Pacific and the Village of La Jolla. Additionally, Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the nation’s foremost municipal golf courses, is situated atop cliffs towering above the Pacific in La Jolla. Torrey Pines GC hosted the memorable 2008 U.S. Open and annually hosts the Farmers Insurance Open, a PGA tour event in January.
La Jolla is also home to the world reknown landmark and oceanfront resort, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. The club claims one of California’s few private beaches and blends the charm of the past with the best of modern-day amenities and recreation. Offering 14 tennis courts, par-3 golf course, guest suites, oceanfront restaurants and recently celebrating its 75th anniversary.
